Nature’s Oven bakery has been fined C$10,000 (US$6,500) after a consumer complained of finding a mouse fetus in a bag of bread produced by the company.

Bakery owner Arnold Kouvenhoven said the find was an act of sabotage because the bag it was bought in was still intact.

Gary Baird of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) admitted that it was still unclear how the mouse came to be in the product, but said that the fine reflected the unsanitary conditions found in the company’s food preparation areas after health inspectors went to investigate the mouse case.
