Pasties are savoury pastry snacks filled with diced lean beef, potato, onion and turnip. They originated in Cornwall, where tin miners used to take them down the mine for lunch. They are now made by many producers outside Cornwall.

The producers in Cornwall have prepared an application for the Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, asking that only pasties made in Cornwall may carry the label “Cornish pasty”.

An earlier bid two years ago was turned down.
