The UK Food Standards Agency is considering a novel food application by a food manufacturer to market ‘milk and yoghurt type’ products with an ingredient that lowers cholesterol.

The ‘milk type’ products under consideration include skimmed, semi-skimmed and vegetable-based milk variants, while the ‘yoghurt type’ products include a range of natural and fruit-flavoured yoghurts.
Both types would include phytosterol-esters, the Agency said. The cholesterol-lowering effect of phytosterols has been demonstrated and is similar to that seen in ‘yellow Fat Spreads’ containing this ingredient, such as Unilever’s Flora Pro-Activ. Indeed it is Unilever that has submitted this latest application.
