Romania has secured for the first time the green light from China to ship frozen pork imports to the country.

The Romanian Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said it had obtained an official letter from the Chinese Certification and Accreditation Authority, which approved the registration of the first Romanian meat company in the market Smithfield Romania – the local arm of pork giant Smithfield Foods, itself now part of Chinese company WH Group.

The move comes after a memorandum of understanding on health animal and food safety was signed last June between Romania's Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Daniel Constantin and China's Minister of Agriculture of the Republic of China, Han Changfu.

"China's decision to import pork from Romania is a great achievement for the Romanian economy," said  Constantin. "For us, this was a priority. We consider the launching of exports to the Chinese market a great opportunity."
