Nestle has revamped the packaging for its Smarties confectionery in Canada, a move it says will help consumers monitor how much of the sweets they eat.
The regular Smarties box is now physically divided into three compartments, all containing what Nestle called "a responsible single portion."
The company has also developed fresh packaging for the Smarties cello bag, which is now a recyclable canister with a custom lid. Nestle said the new packaging would allow consumers to measure out a portion.
A spokesperson for Nestle's Canadian arm said it was the first time the company had developed this kind of packaging. "Canada is the first market to introduce Smarties packaging with physical portion indicators – other markets have introduced disruptive on-pack communication to help educate on portions."
Nestle, meanwhile, has also reduced its seasonal large, hollow Smarties figures and packages to a single portion.
In a statement, Terri Tinella, president for Nestle's confectionery business in Canada, added: "These changes are all about giving Canadians the treats they love while empowering them to make informed choices."
