Trinidad is planning to close one of two state-owned sugar mills, leading to the loss of 9,000 jobs.

Agriculture minister John Rahael said the Brechin Castle mill in central Trinidad will close, while the Usine Sainte Madeleine factory in the south will remain open.

The sacked workers will receive a retrenchment package totalling US$148m, reported Agence France-Presse.
