Judy Pigott, owner of Cowichan Bay’s Udder Guy’s Real Ice Cream parlour, has been ordered to remove the term “all-natural” from her products after inspectors from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) ruled that they were not actually all natural according to agency guidelines.

Pigott, who first sent a list of ingredients on her product label to the CFIA in July 2000, told The Times: “I think [the agency] are being really picky.”


Some of the sticking points for the CFIA involve Pigott’s use of pasteurised milk, which is refortified for the vitamins pasteurisation removes, and her use of carrageen to thicken the whipped cream in concentration of less than 3%.


Inspector Claire Sharpe, of the Victoria office, investigated Pigott’s Duncan plant after the CFIA received a complaint.
