The US Department of Agriculture has said that it is considering imposing strict requirements on biotech firm Monsanto to ensure it sticks to its pledge not to sell biotech wheat until foreign markets accepted it.

Monsanto’s “Roundup Ready” wheat, which would be the first GM wheat in the world, is under review by the US and Canadian governments and could be approved for commercialisation within the next two years, reported Reuters.
Critics are concerned about negative consumer attitudes concerning GM wheat and are fearful that domestic and foreign buyers may refuse to buy all US wheat if the Monsanto wheat is sold.
Even if the wheat is approved by the US, Monsanto has said it will not sell it unless it also has approval from Canada and Japan.
