The sugar-free chocolates, which will contain a sweetener called lactitol, will be available in grocery stores in the US by late April, reported Reuters.

Hershey, the world’s largest chocolate maker, said it hoped the new products would appeal to consumers with dietary restrictions. The company is targeting sales of around US$40m in the first year.

“Consumers have been asking us for sugar-free chocolate for years,” Judy Hogarth, a Hershey spokeswoman, told Reuters. “The product is being marketed to all people who are concerned about their sugar intake, especially to people with diabetes and those on a low carbohydrate diet.”

The sugar-free chocolate, which will carry the logo of the American Diabetes Association, will be available in four varieties: Reese’s Sugar Free Peanut Butter Cups Miniatures, Hershey’s Sugar Free Dark Chocolate Candy, Hershey’s Sugar Free Chocolate Candy with Almonds and Hershey’s Sugar Free Chocolate Candy.
