Ireland-based meat processor ABP Food Group has confirmed plans to build a new retail meat packing facility at the site of its existing UK plant in Shrewsbury, Shropshire.
A spokesperson for ABP told just-food today (12 August) that the proposed investment at the site in Harlescott, including a general “upgrading” of existing facilities, was estimated to cost around GBP20m (US$25m).

However the spokesman declined to discuss the project in detail until its application for the work has been considered by the local planning authority.
In April, ABP said it wanted to acquire Polish beef firm Sklodowscy-Tykocin. In a filing with the Polish competition watchdog, UOKiK, ABP, through its Polish subsidiary ABP Poland, revealed plans to acquire Sklodowscy-Tykocin and its three plants in Tykocin.
In May, ABP announced COO Frank Stephenson is to become the company’s chief executive. Stephenson will take the position on 1 October, replacing Paul Finnerty, who is to retire from the role at the end of September. Stephenson joined ABP Food Group last year from Irish dairy and ingredients business Glanbia.
