UK company Geary’s Bakery has confirmed plans to invest GBP13m (US$17m) in a project to double manufacturing capacity in Leicestershire.
The firm, based in Barrow upon Soar, manufactures bread and rolls for Aldi and Marks and Spencer. It is seeking planning permission to build a 60,000 sq ft factory bakery in nearby Glendale.

The new plant is expected to double Geary’s existing bread-making capacity to around one million loaves and five million rolls a week.
Geary’s declined to comment on the details of the project ahead of a decision by planning chiefs, but it is understood the expanded facility new factory will be used to bake open-topped bread and a selection of rolls, all of which use longer fermenting periods to create a distinctive taste.
Geary’s started out in nearby Ratby in 1906. In 2012, the company relocated to its 20,000 sq ft premises in Barrow upon Soar following a GBP1.5m investment.
