Australian fruit and baked beans processor SPC Ardmona is planning to shut down operations at one of its two major factories in central Victoria for a large part of the year in order to cut costs.

The company’s managing director Nigel Garrard said a decision would be made by May on whether the SPC factory at Shepparton or the Ardmona facility at nearby Mooroopna will be shut for two-third of the year, reported the Australian Financial Review.

SPC and Ardmona merged in late 2001 to form one of the country’s largest food companies.

The company supplies private label products to Australian retailers Coles Myer, Woolworths and Foodland Associated.
