Spanish supermarket chain Mercadona has posted a 2002 profit of €91m (US$98m) after tax, a 30% increase year-on-year.

Gross profit for the year was €133m, a 29% increase from 2001, while turnover was up 28% to €5.79bn.

In 2002, Mercadona increased its workforce by 7,000 to 34,000. It plans to increase its number of employees by 4,000 in 2003.

In 2003, the company plans to invest €350m in opening 100 new supermarkets and a logistics centre in Albatera, southeastern Spain, and in the construction of a logistics centre in Huevar, southern Spain, reported the Spanish News Digest.
