Tesco Malaysia has not received information from its UK parent Tesco regarding any plan to acquire Royal Ahold’s Tops supermarket chain in Malaysia, according to a Tesco Malaysia official.

Tesco Malaysia is “doing business as usual. There is no communication from the UK that they are interested in buying Tops,” the official told Dow Jones Newswires.

Last week a report in the Business Times claimed that troubled Dutch retailer Ahold was in talks with Hong Kong retailer Dairy Farm International regarding the sale of Tops. Rumours then followed that Tesco may be interested in acquiring the Tops chain.

Ahold owns around 100 Tops supermarkets in Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand.
