The online grocer, half owned by US grocery store operator Safeway, said it had started accepting online orders from Seattle-area shoppers on Wednesday and would begin deliveries on 28 July, reported the Associated Press.

Safeway.com, which is also part owned by UK retail giant Tesco and private investors, now operates in eight markets in the US. The latest expansion will enable it to better compete with rival grocer albertsons.com, owned by Idaho-based grocery store operator Albertson’s.

Albertsons.com operates in seven of the eight markets in which Safeway.com now operates and is said to be considering further expansion.
