Great American Snacks, a subsidiary of McCain Foods, plans to close its production plant in Monroe, North Carolina, with workers set to lose their jobs.
The site is shutting due to the age of the building and “challenging” infrastructure, with the closure expected to be completed by the end of September, Canada-based frozen foods maker McCain said in a statement posted on its web site.

Products manufactured at the Monroe plant will be moved to other locations in the Great American Snacks supply network to keep up supply to customers, as well as the “opportunity to enhance the company’s products and services”.
Affected workers will be offered severance pay and help with finding new jobs.
Great American Snacks operates two facilities, with the other based in Idaho. The company manufactures a range of appetisers including onion rings and coated jalapeños and vegetables for frying. It also offers custom products, supplying national chains, private-label customers and distributors.
Jeff DeLapp, president for McCain’s North America division, said: “It is never an easy decision to close a plant, especially when it means job losses. It is our priority to ensure that all of our employees are treated fairly and respectfully. We will be offering severance packages, as well as outplacement assistance to all those impacted.”
