Australian meats supplier D’Orsogna has started the construction of a factory that is set to double its capacity.

The family-owned business, based in Western Australia, is building a new plant at Merryfield Business Park, just north of Melbourne in the south-east of Australia.

D’Orsogna already has a site in the area at in the Melbourne suburb of Mt Waverley but the new facility is set to be its primary unit in the region.

“We have ambitious expansion plans for the business over the next few years. The scale and flexibility of the Merrifield site provides us with an opportunity to essentially double our manufacturing footprint,” D’Orsogna managing director Brad Thomason said.

D’Orsogna was set up by Italian migrant brothers Tommaso and Giovanni D’Orsogna in 1949 and has grown to employ 550 staff.

Its products are sold at Australian retailers including Woolworths Ltd, Coles and Metcash. The business also supplies foodservice customers.
