The British Columbia Salmon Farmers Association has scrambled to head off a local boycott by the Canadian province’s restaurateurs on using farmed salmon.

The boycott is in place, say several Vancouver restaurants, because of customer fears about the health safety of the product.
“We are alarmed at the extreme escalation of the debate surrounding farm-raised versus wild salmon and encourage consumers to not be hasty…much of the information in the marketplace about farm raised salmon is simply not true,” said Mary Ellen Waling, association executive director.
The boycott had followed a campaign launched by the Coastal Alliance for Aquaculture Reform (CAAR), which aimed at persuading restaurants and stores to stop selling farmed salmon by alleging the use in farms of chemicals and antibiotics.
