The Russian agriculture minister Alexei Gordeyev will fly to the United States later this month (May) in an attempt finally to draw a line under the fractious dispute over chicken sales between the two countries.

Russia abruptly banned imports of American chicken last year, citing concerns over veterinary and health procedures.

US officials insisted the chickens were safe and Washington accused Moscow of effectively imposing trade barriers.

The US recently imposed tougher veterinary certificates, prompting Russia to provisionally lift the ban.

Gordeyev is expected to discuss ways in which Russia can independently verify the new requirements before making this decision permanent.
