Frozen chicken imports from the Netherlands that have been doctored with beef protein powder present a risk of BSE, according to a news item in the Guardian newspaper.

The beef protein is added to help the chicken meat absorb more water, thus adding weight and consequently beefing up profits.
The report says that chicken from Brazil and Thailand have been treated in this manner prior to import into the UK for at least five years.
A report by the Irish Food Safety Authority is reported to point the finger at Dutch firms Lelie, Vrieskoop and de Kippenhof.
