Speaking at a national conference on the food processing industry, Du said the move to bring Chinese standards in line with international rules is essential as the country seeks export markets for its agricultural produce: “Quality and safety are the passport for our country’s farm products to enter the international market.”

Boosting farm exports has become a high political priority since China’s entry into the World Trade Organisation (WTO) last year, a move which bought increased competition for the country’s farmers from imported goods.
