Chinese supermarket operator Lianhua has said it is applying to set up its first European store with a partner in Belgium by the end of the year.

Lianhua plans to sell its goods in Europe and buy European products to sell in China, according to company executive Richard Zhou.

“We should get a licence for an office in one to two months, and for a supermarket perhaps before the end of this year,” Zhou, a spokesman for Lianhua’s planned European office, told Reuters.

Zhou said Lianhua would seek to tie up French retailer Carrefour or another major European operator.
