Spain’s Ebro Foods has set out its sustainability objectives including a target to eliminate the use of non-reusable plastics and to ensure 100% of the food processor’s packaging is recyclable or reusable.

The Madrid-listed business said it is investing EUR150m (US$165.3m) in the global project entitled Rumbo A 2030 to reflect its target threshold. The company has set up a special website to monitor its progress – CaringforYouandthePlanet.com.

Ebro Foods is engaged in the production and processing of pasta, rice, organic food, sauces and ready meals. In August, the company acquired the Tilda basmati rice brand from US food group Hain Celestial.

Three “fundamental areas of action” form the plan: “guaranteeing the environmental efficiency of all the group’s operations; mitigating and adjusting to the effects of climate change; and ensuring the sustainability of our principal raw materials.”

Ebro Foods said the goal is to ensure 100% of its raw materials are “environmentally, economically and socially sustainable by 2030 and 100% of our suppliers to have acceded to the group’s supplier code of conduct or operate according to ESG (environmental, social and corporate governance) policies.”

Along with cutting non-reusable plastics and using recyclable or reusable packaging, Rumbo A 2030 will seek to: “reduce water consumption and increase the use of recycled and reused water; reuse and recover the waste generated at our plants, setting our sights on achieving zero waste; reduce the quantity of packaging materials and 100% paper and cardboard from forests managed in accordance with FSC/PFSC standards or recycled.”
