Osem, an Israeli subsidiary of Swiss giant Nestlé, has acquired the pet food business of the Israeli arm of Anglo-Dutch CPG giant Unilever for an undisclosed sum.

The deal remains subject to the approval of Israel’s competition authorities.

Osem chief financial officer Pinhas Kimelman said pet food was not part of Unilever’s core business but was becoming core to the activities of Nestlé, which recently acquired pet food giant Ralston Purina of the US. “Nestle is expanding its activities in pet food and since we already distribute its products this acquisition fitted in with the strategy,” Kimelman told Reuters.

That said, Osem does not foresee any further Israeli acquisitions in the pet food business.
