Ireland-based meat group Kepak is “actively pursuing” retail listings for burger products in the US after receiving a regulatory green light to sell the patties Stateside.

Kepak has been granted access by the US Department of Agriculture to ship the burgers, made at the company’s facility in Ballybay, Co Monaghan, to the country.

Asked when the burgers will go on sale in the US and at which retail chains, Kepak said in a statement: “The company is actively pursuing retail contracts in the United States.”

Kepak is also targeting foodservice outlets and says distribution will first focus on New York and Boston.

Two years ago, Kepak launched its Kepak’s Celtic Beef Company beef brand in the US. It emphasised the beef used for the burgers would be “grass-fed” and “hormone-free”.

Managing director John Horgan added: “Kepak North America has been busy growing the sales of our Irish beef since the launch of our Celtic Beef Company brand a number of years ago and this new burger range will enhance our foodservice offering and allow us to build upon the tremendous success in retail channels that we have already enjoyed in the region.”
