The producers are angered by the proposed sugar industry assistance package. However, Bundaberg Canegrowers’ chairman Noel Baldwin said growers in the region cannot afford to sacrifice any profits and says this sort of action will not benefit anyone in the long-term.
Farmers in Tully, Queensland, unanimously decided they will not be sending any crop to the mill in the year 2003 unless they get a decent price for sugar.
One sugar cane producer told just-food.com: “You cannot keep producing a commodity when you are not getting even the cost of production. We hope that all sugar cane growing areas in Queensland follow suit.”
