The country’s health ministry said that several hundred tonnes of rotting frozen meat had been distributed in ten of Iran’s 28 provinces. The rotten meat is believed to have originated in India.

Despite no reported cases of illness associated with the rotten meat, some meat traders in Tehran have reported plummeting sales.

Several Iranian newspapers have reported that some of the rotten meat had received customs stamps, whilst some even alleged the involvement of certain senior officials.

It is thought that the smugglers may have been using illegal landing spots to get the meat into the country, reported Agence France-Presse.
