US packaged foods group Sara Lee has announced a major launch of five new bakery breads.

The new breads aim to emulate homemade bread. Two are wholegrain varieties containing 100% whole-wheat flour. Other ingredients used in the new products include honey, butter and brown sugar. Most of them also have toppings such as dusted flour and wheat bran. Some have split tops or double-split top crusts to give them a home-baked appearance.

The recommended retail price of the new products ranges from US$2.09 to $3.29, depending on market and loaf variety.

Sara Lee Bakery Breads are being introduced a year after Sara Lee acquired Earthgrains, the country’s second-largest packaged bread and baked goods producer. The extension of the Sara Lee brand into the fresh bread aisle will use the former Earthgrains’ direct-store delivery system.
