A team consisting of a housewife, a racing driver, a mechanic and a design engineer was brought together to test the humble shopping trolley, which this week celebrated its 65th birthday.

A number of leading stores were asked to provide a trolley, with just Safeway declining the invitation, reported the Express newspaper. Out of a possible 250 points, none scored higher than 174. Tesco came top, while Waitrose came last with just 146 points.

Despite the variety of trolleys now available – trolleys with space for a baby, for twin babies, for a baby and a toddler, trolleys with bottle compartments and so on – it appears they still cause significant frustration to shoppers.
