German meat processor Toennies is to create 50 new jobs at its Tican arm in Denmark.

The additional employment will be created at Tican’s plant at Thisted in northern Denmark to meet demand for products targeted at Japan and Taiwan.

The company hopes demand will make up for what it anticipates will be reduced exports of pork to the UK after Brexit – Britain’s departure from the European Union on 29 March.

It said extra staff are needed for de-boning work and processing products destined for Japan.

Tonnies said production at Tican cannot cover the demand from export markets.

The company said within three to four months its production department will be expanded with equipment for sliced products for the Japanese foodservice sector and retail market.

Tican CEO Ove Thejls said: “We have a goal of increasing sales to Asia – and especially to Japan – in the future, and we see good opportunities after the new free trade agreement between Japan and the EU has just entered into force.

“There is still much uncertainty about Brexit, but we must expect that UK’s importance for Danish exports of pig meat will be reduced regardless of the outcome of the negotiations between the EU and the UK.

“The addition of new suppliers also means that there will be a need for an increase in the slaughter capacity in Thisted over the autumn, so that capacity reaches approx. 42,000 pigs weekly.”

Toennies took over the Tican processing business in 2015.
