Costing £24.99 (US$38.96), the jackfruit is the most expensive fruit on sale in Britain at the moment. Sainsbury’s is confident that it will get a positive reaction from consumers.

A spokesman told the Evening Standard: “Customers are prepared to try to enjoy an increasing variety of exotic fruits.”

Jackfruit, which Sainsbury’s is importing from Thailand, can grow up to three feet long and weigh 100lb. Those on sale in the UK will be smaller, at around 25lb.

The fruit has a strange smell, but is reported to taste similar to banana and pineapple. It can either be eaten raw or used as a vegetable.
