French charcuterie business Groupe Popy has acquired local peer Groupe Gilbert Lemelle to broaden its geographic presence domestically and its range of customers.

The enlarged supplier will have ten production sites and a portfolio of brands including Popy, Gilbert Lemelle, Amand Terroir and Charles Keller. Combined, the companies generate turnover of more than EUR90m (US$102.9m).

In a statement published by CM-CIC Conseil, a French M&A advisory firm that worked on the deal, the businesses were described as “perfectly complementary”. The transaction, it said, would “reinforce” Groupe Popy’s position in the market for the French sausage products andouille and andouillette. 

The statement added: “Geographically very anchored to the east and in the Paris region, the Gilbert Lemelle group completes Groupe Popy’s presence in the west and the centre of France. The supermarket, restaurant and wholesaler customers of Gilbert Lemelle adds to the distribution channels of Popy, still not very present in the supermarket channel.”

The deal comes 18 months after Groupe Popy bought another French charcuterie supplier, Groupe Amand-Bianic.
