Australian supermarket giant Woolworths pleaded guilty yesterday [Monday] in the Adelaide Magistrates Court to one count of selling food unfit for human consumption.

The case refers to an incident in which a customer found a packet of discoloured and “putrid” Don Smallgoods Echo Valley pre-packed sliced honey ham in the chain’s Stirling store.
The ham had apparently been reduced for quick sale on 3 May as it was within three days of its expiry date. That same day, a customer noticed that the ham was grey in colour and oozing a creamy white substance.
The prosecutor for the case stressed the serious nature of the matter. A judgement is expected this month, reported the Adelaide Advertiser.
