Two US poultry plants that closed amid massive recalls following a listeria outbreak have been given the all clear to reopen.

Pilgrim’s Pride subsidiary Wampler Foods was scheduled to reopen its Franconia, Pennsylvania plant last night. Wampler Foods recalled more than 27m pounds of meat last month on concerns that it may have become infected with the potentially-fatal listeria bacteria. A strain of the bacteria that was found at the Franconia plant was found to be the same as the strain responsible for an outbreak of listeria in the northeastern US that caused 7 deaths and around 50 cases of illness.
The same strain of bacteria was recently found in a sample of deli meat that was produced at JL Foods in Camden, New Jersey. The company recalled around 200,000 pounds of meat and closed the plant, reported Dow Jones Business News.
The Camden plant resumed operations yesterday, having been declared free of the listeria bacteria.
