US food maker Hormel Foods has announced it is to launch a limited edition flavour of its canned meat product Spam to tie in with the Broadway launch of the new musical, Monty Python’s Spamalot.
Hormel said it is to introduce a “golden honey grail” flavour of Spam in a Spamalot collector’s edition can in honour of the musical, which is based on the film “Monty Python and the Holy Grail”.
The limited edition product will be available from February 2005 at selected New York City retailers, including Broadway merchandise stores and the Shubert Theatre merchandise kiosks.
Hormel’s famous canned meat product has been linked to the British comedy group Monty Python ever since their famous Spam sketch, first broadcast in 1970, which was based on the idea of a menu on which every item includes Spam. During the two-minute sketch the word “Spam” is mentioned 94 times.
Many years later, the act of flooding email addresses with junk mail acquired the name “spamming” after the sketch.
