The creation of a European Union (EU) ‘name and shame’ list of EU food retailers, traders and producers who habitually break European rules limiting pesticide residues on their products has been tabled by MEPs.

The European Parliament’s environment committee has proposed that erring companies be posted by national food regulators on the Internet. If backed by the full parliament and the EU Council of Ministers, the idea would be written into a new directive on setting maximum residue levels for pesticides in food or feed.

The legislation would harmonise all such rules across the EU for around 1,000 pesticides and 160 food commodities.
