The motion, from the opposition New Democratic Party, calls for a task force to be set up to investigate the best way to remove trans fats from products, and the eventual development of legislation to limit the amount of trans fats contained in food products, reported Reuters. Canada’s House of Commons voted in favour of the motion by 193 to 73.
Trans fats, or hydrogenated oils, are often used in food products to extend shelf life and improve texture, but they are believed to be more harmful than saturated fats.
It is hoped the new task force will fully investigate alternatives in order to prevent other harmful ingredients being used to replace trans fats.
