Norway’s top health and beauty company Midelfart & Co. has said it is now ready to move from the research stage to developing functional foods and drinks using Tonalin®, a CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) product that has documented body fat reduction properties.

Tonalin can now be produced as a tasteless, water-soluble powder, and the food industry is showing great interest in the product as an ingredient that can actively reduce body fat, the company said in a press release.

A recent Norwegian study by Scandinavian Clinical Research was the first to examine the long-term effects of CLA on body fat. The results, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition earlier this year, reconfirmed the fat-reducing effects of CLA and showed a surprisingly high 9% reduction in body fat mass (BFM) when using CLA product Tonalin.

The test followed 180 healthy overweight adults for a year in a double-blind, placebo-controlled study and concluded CLA reduced body fat mass.

Tonalin has been developed with ingredient supplier Cognis and the Norwegian biotech firm Natural, a leading research investor in the study of lipids.
