Confectionery heavyweight Mondelez International is to invest more than EUR50m (US$59.3m) to rebuild its biscuit plant at Jussy in France which was hit by a major fire last September.

The US-based Cadbury and Oreo brands owner said the investment will allow it to introduce new technologies and capabilities and increase capacity at the 100-year old plant in the Hauts-de-France region “to serve the company’s growth ambition in bakery across Europe”.

The investment will also preserve the 135 jobs at the site.

Mondelez said this project comes on top of an annual investment of EUR30m across its other eight production sites in France.

Vince Gruber, the company’s executive vice president & president Europe, said: “As a result of the new technology, capabilities and increased volume capacity that the investment will bring, the new Jussy site will play a key role as we pursue our growth ambition in bakery in Europe, with local brands like Lu Napolitain and Lu Pépito, and expanding global brands like Milka.”

The revived Jussy facility will be inaugurated in mid-2022 with its new lines. In the meantime, the site restarted one production line at the end of March.
