A firm of British agricultural consultants has rubbished claims from environmentalists that GM and non-GM food production cannot co-exist without cross-contamination.
In a new report, PG Economics said that good farming techniques such as separating crops, passing information to neighbouring producers and careful animal husbandry, should guarantee success.
Author Graham Brookes said: “The co-existence of different agricultural production systems requires mutual respect and shared responsibility by all parties, both GM and non-GM growers.”
The paper bases its conclusions on experience in North American and Spain since 1995. Meanwhile, the Agricultural Biotechnology in Europe group claims seven years’ Bt maize cultivation in Spain has not contaminated non-GM crops.
