Notably, the number of environmental sustainability-related patent applications in the consumer industry was 1,542 in Q4 2023, versus 7,517 in the prior quarter.

The top five companies accounted for 35% of patenting activity

Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Haier Group filed the most environmental sustainability patents within the consumer industry in Q4 2023. The company filed 185 environmental sustainability-related patents in the quarter, compared with 962 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Gree Electric Appliances Inc of Zhuhai with 123 environmental sustainability patent filings, Daikin Industries (76 filings), and Midea Group (75 filings) in Q4 2023.

Patenting activity was driven by China with a 33% share of total patent filings

The largest share of environmental sustainability related patent filings in the consumer industry in Q4 2023 was in China with 33%, followed by the US (18%) and Japan (9%). The share represented by China was 44% lower than the 77% share it accounted for in Q3 2023.
