African swine fever has escalated in Germany after the first case was discovered in a dead wild boar last month in the north-east state of Brandenburg.

Germany’s ministry for food and agriculture said in a statement that ten more cases were confirmed today (12 October) in the state, which is located close to the border with Poland, with the number of infected wild board now totalling 65 within the same locality.

The Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) said the latest cases were confirmed in samples tested by the Friedrich Loeffler Institute (FLI), with eight of the ten infections found in the Oder-Spree district and two in the Spree-Neisse district.

“During a large-scale search for wild boars in the second core area in the Märkisch-Oderland district, including using drone technology, a large number of wild boars were found on the Oder island of Küstrin at the weekend – both with dead animals and animals that might have ASF,” the statement read. “With the help of experts from FLI, the further procedure is currently being clarified by the responsible authority in the district. The aim is to isolate the animal group and thus prevent the spread of the animal disease.”

The ministry added that as it stands other areas of Germany are unaffected by ASF.

Further infected pigs will be a new blow to Germany’s pork exporters after China and South Korea banned imports after the discovery of the initial case in September.
