Finland-based food group Apetit is to close a domestic fish products facility as it looks to improve the profitability of that part of its business.

Apetit said it would shut a site in Kustavi in western Finland and concentrate its fish products operations further north in Kuopio and in Helsinki, the country’s capital. An office in the south-western city of Turku will also close.

Some 15 staff across the Kustavi and Turku sites will lose their jobs. However, Apetit said the Kuopo and Helsinki facilities will add seven new positions.

“The closure decisions now made are difficult, but they are necessary in order to improve the profitability of the fish products group and to adopt a new, simpler operating model. With the concentration now taking place we are aiming for improved cost efficiency, more effective logistics and more systematic development and control of operations,” Apetit CEO Veijo Meriläinen said.
