European dairy cooperative Arla Foods is expanding a plant in Germany for the development and production of fresh milk products.

The investment at the facility in Upahl, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, will include a new pilot plant and laboratory for fresh milk. Currently, the site develops yogurt, cottage cheese and milk drinks, which Arla said are “tested for later industrial series production”. It also specialises in the production of fermented fresh milk products.

Markus Mühleisen, head of Arla Foods in Germany, said: “By investing in the new plant, we are further expanding our dairy in Upahl as a centre of excellence for the production of fresh milk products and strengthening our innovation expertise and our brand business in Germany. In the future, we will be able to develop product innovations in a more targeted, easier and faster way, and even better fulfil the wishes of our trading partners for new products.”

Arla said it has invested almost EUR60m (US$66.3m) in the Upahl plant over the past three years and plans further investment amounting to what it called the “low double-digit million euro range”. Brands produced at the site include Arla Skyr destined for markets in Germany and Europe, as well as products for the Arla Bio line and the regional brand Hansano.
