Thousands of chickens in South Korea and Japan have been killed by avian influenza, while poultry farmers in Thailand say thousands of birds have also died there, although Thailand has not officially confirmed the presence of the disease, reported Dow Jones International News.


In Vietnam, more than one million chickens have died during the latest outbreak, and officials have ordered the slaughter of any sick chickens.


In response to the outbreaks, Hong Kong said it had halted poultry imports from South Korea, Japan and Vietnam, while Cambodia said it had placed a temporary ban on poultry imports from bird flu-hit countries.


Some strains of the disease can occasionally be transmitted to humans. Health officials say three people in Vietnam have died from the virus during the latest outbreaks.
