The government plans to set up a research fund to study markets in Asia, where it says demand for food will double from 2007 levels by 2050. It said it will also work to develop “Australia’s own trusted and recognised food brand”.

“Australia’s food is the envy of the world, as we produce more than twice the food we consume, we need to remain focused on finding new markets for our high quality exports,” Ludwig said.

The minister added the plan would mean the government’s food policies would be “aligned with the opportunities of the Asian century”.

The Australian government wants the country’s food industry to be more globally competitive and sustainable.
