The line will be for plastic-packed shelf-stable soups and meals, a rapidly-growing category in Australia, and will also service regional export demand.

New production at Wagga Wagga will replace product imported from a Heinz plant in Germany. The company expects the new line will eventually generate an additional 26 jobs at the plant.

“With the right investment, it is still possible to competitively manufacture in Australia,” said Peter Widdows, managing director of Heinz Australia which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the US food group.

“We evaluated this investment very thoroughly given the trend in manufacturing to source off shore, and are pleased that our Wagga facility demonstrated its value in this project.”
