Stevia supplier GLG Life Tech has signed a distribution agreement for the natural sweetener in Australia with local sugar refiner Sugar Australia.

Sugar Australia will market GLG’s products, including Rebpure, Rebsweet and Blendsure in Australia and New Zealand under a five-year deal, GLG said on Tuesday (13 July).

GLG CEO Luke Zhang said the agreement with Sugar Australia demonstrated the company’s desire to work with “several market leaders” to market stevia.

Sugar Australia is a venture in which Australian sugar producer Sucrogen owns a 75% stake.

Sucrogen CEO Ian Glasson said: “Sugar Australia has chosen to partner with GLG in the food and beverage sector to bring a new and exciting range of stevia ingredients as part of our range of sweetener solutions, particularly as manufactures seek alternatives in developing healthier products that meet consumers’ changing needs.”

Last month, Australian conglomerate CSR agreed to sell Sucrogen to Singapore-based Wilmar International for A$1.75bn.
