McLeod, currently chief executive officer of Halfords Group, has experience as a retail chief executive with Asda before becoming part of the executive leadership of Wal-Mart’s German operations.
Wesfarmers managing director Richard Goyder said McLeod had the “international retailing expertise needed to lead the performance turnaround of Coles.”
Wesfarmers, began their search for a managing director for Coles in November, when chief operating officer Mick McMahon took over temporarily.
“Ian has lived and breathed retail from his early days working in Asda stores and then through a range of managerial responsibilities encompassing merchandising, the supply chain, store operations and productivity improvement,” said Goyder.
