Woolworths Ltd, Australia’s largest grocer, has launched a slew of price cuts, just days after arch-rival Coles said it would bring down prices across the country.

The company said today (28 January) that shoppers would pay less on 3,500 grocery products – a campaign that came in the wake of Coles’ move to introduce more uniform pricing across Australia.

Woolworths director of supermarkets Greg Foran insisted the company was “the price leader” in Australia.

“At the end of the day, customers simply want the lowest possible price from their supermarket and Woolworths will absolutely deliver it. The reason we can do this is because we’ve spent a decade driving costs out of our business and becoming as efficient as we can,” Foran said.

“We are putting those efficiency gains to good use by rewarding our customers with meaningful savings.”
